Why people choose Chalong
Chalong is the junction of the south: the roads to Rawai, Kata, Phuket Town and the Big Buddha all meet here, and the pier is the departure point for most of the island’s boat trips. That makes it unglamorous and extremely convenient in equal measure.
For buyers it means value. Houses and land here cost a good deal less than at the beaches ten to fifteen minutes away, the area has a large and established residential community, and everything practical — schools, vets, gyms, supermarkets, workshops — is close at hand.
Where it sits
Chalong occupies the inland ground behind Chalong Bay in the south of the island. Rawai is ten minutes south, Kata and Karon fifteen minutes west over the hill, and Phuket Town twenty minutes north.
The airport, at the far northern end of the island, is around fifty minutes — the longest run in this guide.

Chalong in detail
A short history
Chalong grew around its bay and its temple. Wat Chalong is the most important Buddhist temple on Phuket and the focus of the island’s religious life, drawing visitors and worshippers year-round.
The bay was a trading and fishing anchorage long before it became a departure point for island-hopping, and the pier remains the practical centre of the area.
The bay and the pier
Chalong Bay is a sheltered anchorage rather than a swimming beach — shallow, tidal and busy with boats. The pier handles most of the island’s day trips to Phi Phi, Racha and Coral Island, and yacht services cluster around it.
Eating and drinking
A broad and unpretentious range: Thai kitchens, expat pubs, seafood by the bay and a growing cafe scene. Prices are noticeably below the beach areas.
Shopping and everyday errands
Supermarkets, hardware, vets, workshops and clinics are all here, plus markets. It is one of the more self-sufficient areas in the south.
Schools, healthcare and getting around
Several international schools sit within fifteen to twenty-five minutes, and the major private hospitals in Phuket Town are around twenty. A car is essential.

Is there a beach at Chalong?
Not a swimming one. The bay is shallow, tidal and full of boats. Rawai is ten minutes away and Kata fifteen.
Is Chalong a good place to live?
For value and practicality, yes. It has a large established residential community and everything you need day to day. It is not scenic.
Can a foreign buyer own here?
Mostly houses on land, held via registered long lease with ownership of the building or another lawful structure, with some condominium stock where foreign freehold may be available.
How far is the airport?
About fifty minutes. If you fly frequently, this is worth weighing seriously.
Is it busy?
Traffic through the junction is heavy, particularly around the temple during festivals. Residential streets away from the main roads are calm.
