How Certification Works in Thailand
Thailand does not have a notary public in the sense familiar to buyers from Europe or North America. The equivalent function is performed by Thai lawyers who have completed the required training and are registered with the Lawyers Council of Thailand to provide notarial services attestation. They can witness and certify signatures, attest copies of documents, and certify affidavits and declarations for use domestically and abroad.
Where a certified document is to be used in another country, a further step is usually required. The most common requirement is a power of attorney allowing a lawyer to complete a purchase, sale or transfer on your behalf when you cannot travel. This is entirely routine and works well, provided the document is drafted in the correct form, executed correctly, certified and legalised, and delivered in physical original form in good time — which invariably takes longer than people expect when international courier and consular steps are involved.
Beyond that, certification arises for company documents and shareholder resolutions, translations of title deeds and contracts, affidavits confirming marital status or identity, consents required by a bank or a juristic person, and documents supporting visa and immigration applications. Certified translations between Thai and English are frequently needed alongside the certification itself.
