Where it sits
The town sits on the island’s south-eastern side, with the main shopping centres a few minutes west and Chalong twenty minutes south. The west coast beaches are a thirty to forty minute drive over the hills.

Phuket Town in detail
A short history
The town was built on tin. Chinese, Malay, Portuguese and Thai influences left an architecture found nowhere else in Thailand — the shophouses of Thalang Road and its neighbours, with their arcaded fronts and long internal courtyards.
Decades of neglect were followed by a restoration movement that has turned the old town into the island’s cultural centre, and the annual Vegetarian Festival remains one of the most extraordinary events in the country.
The old town
A grid of restored shophouse streets with cafes, galleries, boutique hotels and independent shops, plus the Sunday walking street market. It is compact and genuinely walkable — rare on this island.
Eating and drinking
The best and most varied food on Phuket, from hawker stalls and morning markets to Michelin-listed local kitchens and a strong cafe culture. Prices are a fraction of the beach areas.
Shopping and everyday errands
The island’s largest shopping centres are minutes away, alongside fresh markets, department stores and every service you might need. Nothing on Phuket is better supplied.
Schools, healthcare and getting around
Several international schools are within ten to twenty minutes and the major private hospitals are in the town itself. Much of the centre is walkable, though a car helps.

Is it strange to buy on Phuket and not be near a beach?
Plenty of residents do exactly that. You are thirty minutes from Kata and forty from the west coast, with a town around you the rest of the time. It suits people who want a life rather than a holiday.
What is the old town like to live in?
Walkable, characterful and busier at weekends. Restored shophouses can be superb homes but need proper surveys — they are old buildings with old-building problems.
Can a foreign buyer own here?
Condominium stock exists where foreign freehold may be available, and shophouses and homes on land are held via long lease or other lawful structures. Older buildings need careful title checks.
Is it good value?
Yes. You are paying town prices rather than coastal ones, and the practical infrastructure is the best on the island.
Is parking a problem?
In the old town, yes. Any property there should come with a solution; do not assume street parking.
Do I need a car?
Less than most areas for daily life, but yes for the beaches and the airport.
